Check in here to see what we've been up to this week.
This week we are starting The Great Gatsby.
by F. Scott Fitzgerald
“No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.”
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers.
The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.
The Great Gatsby is one of the great classics of twentieth-century literature
Reading
Homework usually consists of reading each night. This should take you approximately 30 minutes, give or take, depending on how quickly you read.
Here's a brief introductory clip from the 2013 movie version of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. Check it out and get inspired for the roaring world of the 1920s that we are about to see.
Monday: Pages 1–25
Tuesday: Pages 25–50
Wednesday: Pages 50–75
Thursday: Pages 75–100
Friday: 100–125
Please be sure to keep up with the reading each night. If you fall behind, it can be challenging to catch up. I highly recommend reading the recommended pages each night. If you choose to read ahead, make sure you review what happened in the assigned pages before class. Discussions and pop quizzes will be based on that material.
